Very popular on smaller fly-in lakes, "mini camps" (more accurately "tent camps") consist of a floored, wood-framed, roofed camp with canvas / tent walls. Other than that, they are much like the more typical outpost cabins used throughout the North. They are comfortable, secure, and, of course, weatherproof. Soundproofing for "things that go bump in the night" is another matter ! Mini camps usually are equipped with a propane fridge and 2 or 3-burner stove (occasionally propane lighting as well). The "kitchen" will offer all basic cookware, silverware, serving utensils, etc. for meal preparation. A central dining / sitting / card table is the social centre of any outpost camp, basic or otherwise. |

Almost certainly there will be a "Quebec heater" (wood stove) in the cabin, as well as a firewood box stocked with dry wood, kindling and a few newspapers - both when you arrive and again when you leave. Bring a belt axe, a naptha lantern and fuel just in case firewood has not been cut. Practise fire safety and do not leave a camp stove or fire unattended. Do not cut trees for firewood ! Instead, use "deadfall" which is usually in good supply. |
Water will have to be hauled from the lake / river and an outdoor "privy" (outhouse) is standard service. Bunk beds are the norm, usually fitted with a foam mattress on top of which you throw a sleeping bag for bedding. Guests often bring along their favourite pillow for comfort's sake. |
