Shallow & Shady Characterspresented by ...

Bass fishing often puts anglers in some of the shallowest water available, and rightly so, since bass are notorious for spawning, holding and feeding in water less than 6 feet deep.
Fishing the shallows also reduces the amount of water that anglers have to scout in order to find fish. On many lakes, deeper water areas are simply too expansive for most fishermen to effectively search key structural elements. Narrowing down the search to shallow areas or places where there is shade-producing cover increases the likelihood of finding fish. Sure, there are bass in deep water, but fortunately bass are shallow and shady characters.
Shallow & Shady Spots

Primary shallow-water locations include shorelines, island saddles, mid-lake humps and shoals, weedy flats, points, creek mouths and areas strewn with fallen or standing timber and/or stumps.

Some of the best shoreline spots include boat docks, anchored boats & rafts, expansive lily pad beds, floating weed mats, stumps, overhanging vegetation and undercut banks. If there is good lead in cover, even a foot or two of water can be plenty.
