Fly-in Camps & Lodges

Outpost Camps

Outpost camps offer the same kinds of equipment and facilities as the mini / tent camps but are built more solidly, more permanently built - typically constructed with plywood exteriors or vertical logs. Some are 1-room affairs, but many offer separate sleeping quarters, even screened porches. These permanent camps are usually more spacious, better equipped and furnished than mini camps - but don't expect luxury.
Full-sized fridges and a counter / sink is the rule rather than the exception (but still no running water). There is a trend in the outpost cabin business to upgrade and improve cabins to "cottage" status. Air services and outfitters now advertise outpost facilities as cottages, chalets, or log cabins. Ask to see photos - interior and exterior.
Boats, motors and fuel are provided in the package price but are usually based on even-numbered parties (fishing two to a boat). Sometimes a surcharge is added for odd-man parties, since the "odd" number may require an additional flight and / or boat.
If anglers stay a week, a mid-week check (at no additional charge) should be part of the package and will provide the outfitter the opportunity to bring in extra consumable supplies, fuel, beverages, ice, bait, news, whatever. By the way, before the outfitter leaves you at camp, have him inspect the camp, start the fridge, and check the propane supply. Is there a wrench handy for the propane cylinder should it empty and require replacement ? Packing a large pair of vice grips is recommended. And, what about shear and cotter pins for those motors and / or mantles for the naptha lanterns or propane lights ?
At outpost camps, the fishing is almost always fantastic - lots of fish, the chance at a trophy, multi-species lakes or "specialty" (1-species) lakes. Packages are diverse, range widely in price depending on flight distance and the quality of the fishing and / or camp (between $ 400 to $ 1200 per week per person).
In a few locations, select outfitters offer "deluxe" outposts which, in addition to everything provided at more typical outpost camps, feature indoor plumbing, running water, showers, screened porches, etc. These are ideal for family vacations or couples. The price goes up accordingly, but kids regularly get a rate break, balancing out the overall cost of the package.
