This specialized assignment goes to the most technically / mechanically skilled individual in the party. With responsibilities that include the maintenance of boats, motors, propane appliances, even the car, this guy has a very important and demanding job. Everyone will be counting on the reliable performance of all such equipment. Initially, it is his job (during camp set up) to get the boats and motors fuelled up, in the water and running properly. Additionally, he will see to it that boats have oars / paddles, rope and anchor, a bailing can, PFD's or cushions, full gas tanks, extra shear and cotter pins, and an emergency signalling device. |
Next, and just as important, come the propane and naptha appliances - stove, lights, lanterns, heaters, etc. Each must be checked, cleaned, fuelled up, tested. The camp mechanic should bring along a small tool kit which includes a variety of common, adaptable, adjustable tools. The outfitter should demonstrate the correct procedure for lighting / using any and all camp appliances / motors beafore leaving you behind. Faulty equipment can quickly take the edge off a trip, no matter how good the fishing. |
