Release Tips & Techniques

When releasing fish, whatever the reason, a few widely practised techniques and tips have proven effective in improving survival rates.

  • Be decisive about which fish to release.
  • Don't play fish to total exhaustion.
  • Keep the fish upright in the water.
  • Use a glove or cradle, not a landing net.
  • Handle fish minimally with wet hands.
  • Use a gag & hookouts to remove hooks.
  • Cut off deeply imbedded hooks or lures.
  • Resuscitate fish until it struggles.
  • Do not "hang" fish vertically for photos.
  • Do not cull fish from a stringer.
