Catch & Release Sensibilities
Releases
Just as there are legitimate reasons for keeping fish, so too are there times and circumstances that make releasing fish the thing to do. Fishing is largely recreational, and many anglers neither eat fish nor have any use for fish caught. However, they must not be denied the privilege of fishing, but accordingly must recognize that live release is one way to insure that fishing privileges and good fishing are there to enjoy in the future.
Many bodies of water and fish populations cannot withstand sustained, intelligent angling pressure. Such sites and species must gain their reprieve through live release. Live release is not and never was intended to licence anglers unlimited catches. Anglers conscientiously practising catch and release understand that, no matter how carefully treated and released, some fish will not survive the ordeal. Limit catches, practice selective harvest, and use good live release techniques.
The MNR regulations and common sense must be the determining factors when it comes to releasing fish and include the following:
  • fish caught contrary to MNR regulations
  • large predatory fish
  • vulnerable species
  • prime spawners (females)
  • spawning or bedding fish
  • incidental catches
