While trophy fish of many species are becoming increasingly difficult to catch, bass anglers still enjoy the likelihood of catching a trophy bass - a fish over 5 pounds - at most every decent bass lake. But, catching big bass consistently doesn't happen by accident. To be successful, a hawg hunter must devise and work a strategic plan which maximizes the likelihood of locating and catching big bass.

Of course, angling skills, experience, location and, to a lesser extent tackle, play an important role in fishing success, here are a few tips that will help put you onto bigger and better bass.

  • Fish on lakes proven to produce big bass.
  • Search out remote, less-fished lakes & pits.
  • Use quality tackle - rods, reels, line, baits.
  • Fish when bass are most active.
  • Keep presentations s-l-o-w.
  • Use a variety of lures or live baits.
  • Use large lures.
  • Add a scent / taste product.
  • Use salt-impregnated soft plastics.
  • Fish during low-light periods and / or at night.
  • Fish during periods of lunar influence.
  • Fish in / near heavy cover near deep water.
  • Fish deep-water structures, not just shorelines.
  • Work on fish fighting & landing techniques.
  • Document the details of your catch.
